The Truck Moves Left. Is the Space on the Right Really Open?

Large trucks often need extra room to complete a right turn. Watch the turn develop, make the roadway decision, and see why the apparent gap beside a turning truck can become dangerous.

INTERACTIVE TURN DEMONSTRATION

Watch what happens to the “open” space.

The truck is preparing to turn right. Its cab may move left to create turning room, while the trailer follows a tighter path. Make your choice before playing the turn.

Why the turn looks unusual

FMCSA advises motorists that trucks and buses need extra space and time to make wide turns. A large vehicle turning right may initially move left to create enough turning space. Motorists should wait for the large vehicle to finish rather than trying to use the space on its right.
